# Substance Groupers Based on Structure

<mark style="color:$danger;">**This Editorial Guide is used for Education Purposes Only. It is used in the Authoring Courses and Certifications. It is based on the January 2026 Editorial Guide.**</mark>

## Overview

Groupers based on structural properties of the substance that are deemed to be clinically useful will be included in the Substance hierarchy.

For example,

* Benzodiazepine (substance)
* Quinolone (substance)

## Modeling

<table data-header-hidden><thead><tr><th width="159.15234375">Parent concept</th><th width="677.46875">Most distal appropriate descendant of 312413002 | Substance categorized by structure (substance)|</th></tr></thead><tbody><tr><td><strong>Parent concept</strong></td><td>Most distal appropriate descendant of 312413002 |Substance categorized by structure (substance)|</td></tr><tr><td><strong>Semantic tag</strong></td><td>(substance)</td></tr><tr><td><strong>Definition status</strong></td><td>Primitive</td></tr><tr><td><strong>Attributes</strong></td><td>None</td></tr></tbody></table>

## Terming

### FSN

Use the following pattern for the FSN. Groupers are expressed in the singular, i.e., *compound* not *compounds*.

Examples of substances that represent a structural grouper:

* Organic nitrogen compound (substance)
* Halide compound (substance)
* Triazine derivative (substance)
* Copper and/or copper compound (substance)
* Phenothiazine and/or phenothiazine derivative (substance)
* Nucleotide (substance)

Where the same word is used to identify both a group of substances with a particular chemical structure and a particular chemical substance, the following terming for the FSN is used for the substance grouper concept.

\
Substance with X structure (substance)

For example,

* Substance with tetracycline structure (substance)
* Substance with cresol structure (substance)
* Substance with benzene structure (substance)

***

### Preferred Term

Use the following pattern for the Preferred Term.

For example,

* Organic nitrogen compound
* Halide compound
* Triazine derivative
* Copper and/or copper compound
* Phenothiazine and/or phenothioazine derivative
* Nucleotide

Where the same word is used to identify both a group of substances with a particular chemical structure and a particular chemical substance the following pattern will be used for PT the substance grouper concept.

Substance with X structure

For example,

* Substance with tetracycline structure
* Substance with cresol structure
* Substance with benzene structure

### Synonyms

Additional synonyms are not allowed unless explicitly identified as an exception in the editorial guidelines.

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation dynamically by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the current page URL with the `ask` query parameter, and the optional `goal` query parameter:

```
GET https://docs.snomed.org/education/snomed-ct-education-editorial-guide/readme/authoring/domain-specific-modeling/substance/substance-naming-and-modeling-conventions/guidelines-for-substance-hierarchy-grouper-concepts/substance-groupers-based-on-structure.md?ask=<question>&goal=<endgoal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is optional and describes the broader end goal you are ultimately trying to accomplish on behalf of the user. GitBook uses it to tailor the answer towards what is most useful for that goal.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
