ICD-10 Map Overview
Purpose
The SNOMED CT to ICD-10 map is intended to:
leverage electronic health records, encoded using SNOMED CT, to output relevant ICD-10 codes via semi-automated clinical coding
aid in the allocation of ICD-10 codes from SNOMED CT encoded records for use in registries and diagnosis groupers
serve as a basis for the derivation of maps to any of the ICD-10 modifications developed and maintained by member countries
What the Map is Not
It must be understood that the map does not provide:
a complete automation of ICD-10 clinical coding from a SNOMED CT source
support for social, cultural, ethical or financial constraints on ICD-10 coding required by members or other organizations
management of context beyond that found in the source terms and ICD-10 rules and conventions
optimization of ICD-10 codes for billing and reimbursement purposes
Audience for the Map
Users of the map will include SNOMED International Members and Affiliates that:
have deployed, or are deploying, SNOMED CT in clinical information systems
use the 2016 version of ICD-10 (also known as the Fifth Edition) in systems for purposes of statistical reporting, epidemiology, cancer, injury and other registries, quality reporting, safety reporting, and research.
The map can also support use by WHO Collaborating Centers in jurisdictions where SNOMED CT is deployed or is being deployed.
Supported Use Case
Authoritative Resources
The map is based on the latest monthly release of the SNOMED CT International Edition, as distributed by SNOMED International, and uses the 2016 version of ICD-10, as published and maintained by the World Health Organization, as the target classification. The map is updated for each new release of SNOMED CT.
