# English

The SNOMED CT Document Library at [docs.snomed.org](https://docs.snomed.org/) is published in English. If English isn't your first language, you don't need to wait for an official translation to read it. Most modern web browsers can translate any page on the site into your language in a couple of clicks, right where you're reading.

This guide shows you how, for Chrome, Microsoft Edge, Firefox, and Safari.

> **Important: for understanding, not for authoritative terminology** Browser translation is *machine* translation. It's great for general reading comprehension, but it can occasionally mistranslate technical or clinical terms, or miss nuance in specification language. For anything where the precise SNOMED CT terminology matters, please cross-check against the English original, or use one of SNOMED International's officially translated guides where available (see **Official translated guides** below). Browser translation is a convenience tool, not a substitute for official, human-reviewed translations.

## Google Chrome (desktop & Android)

**Desktop:**

{% stepper %}
{% step %}

### Open the page

Open the page on docs.snomed.org.
{% endstep %}

{% step %}

### Look for the Translate icon

Look at the right-hand side of the address bar for a **Translate** icon. Chrome usually offers to translate automatically if the page language differs from your browser language; a small pop-up will appear.

<figure><img src="https://3732672644-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2FhaH6N0uVxJnflYYWJhm9%2Fuploads%2FabP5qE7c9UEDsURUYN9r%2Ftranslate_icon_chrome.png?alt=media&amp;token=9d0a67e9-6d1c-46d9-a306-ea8ffada28ef" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>
{% endstep %}

{% step %}

### Choose your language

Click the icon (or the pop-up), then choose your language from the list.

<figure><img src="https://3732672644-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2FhaH6N0uVxJnflYYWJhm9%2Fuploads%2FkfBLfkPc55fksOaG2Yvk%2Fselect_other_chrome.png?alt=media&amp;token=d44b935e-5fae-4eaf-bf5e-d5ce11888110" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>
{% endstep %}

{% step %}

### Click Translate

Click **Translate**.
{% endstep %}
{% endstepper %}

If you don't see the icon or pop-up:

* Right-click anywhere on the page and select **Translate to \[your language]**.
* Or go to the **⋮** menu (top right) and choose **Translate**.

<figure><img src="https://3732672644-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2FhaH6N0uVxJnflYYWJhm9%2Fuploads%2FvP3uD3oBNHdKdzJzD0kZ%2Fthreedots_chrome.png?alt=media&amp;token=aadbf90e-4212-43fa-bfa5-ec7e86d90460" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

**If neither of those shows a translate option either,** Chrome's automatic translation prompt may simply be switched off. To turn it back on:

{% stepper %}
{% step %}

### Open Chrome Settings

Click the **⋮** menu in the top-right corner of Chrome and open **Settings**.
{% endstep %}

{% step %}

### Go to Languages

Select **Languages** in the left-hand menu.
{% endstep %}

{% step %}

### Turn on the toggle

Scroll down to **Google Translate** and make sure the toggle for **Offer to translate pages that aren't in a language you read** is switched on.
{% endstep %}
{% endstepper %}

**Android (Chrome app):** open the page, tap the translate prompt that appears at the top, or tap **⋮ → Translate**.

## Microsoft Edge

Edge has the same Microsoft Translator technology built in.

{% stepper %}
{% step %}

### Open the page

Open the page on docs.snomed.org. The browser will detect the language of the page, and a menu will appear asking you to confirm that you want to translate it.\

{% endstep %}

{% step %}

### Choose your language and translate

Choose your language from the **Translate to** dropdown and click **Translate**.\

{% endstep %}

{% step %}

### Check the status

Inside the address bar, you'll briefly see a status showing that the page has been translated. If you select the translate icon in the address bar, the menu that appears also shows the status.
{% endstep %}
{% endstepper %}

If no menu appears automatically:

* Click the **Translate** icon on the right side of the address bar (looks like a book with an "A"), or
* Right-click the page and select **Translate to \[your language]**.

To manage this behavior, go to **Settings → Languages** and check "Offer to translate pages that aren't in a language I read," and add/reorder your preferred languages there.

## Firefox

Since Firefox 118, translation is fully built in and runs **locally on your device**, so nothing is sent to a translation server, which is a nice privacy bonus.

{% stepper %}
{% step %}

### Open the page

Open the page on docs.snomed.org.
{% endstep %}

{% step %}

### Open the translation panel

A translation panel usually opens automatically. If not, click the translate icon in the toolbar (right side of the address bar), or right-click the page and choose **Translate Page**.
{% endstep %}

{% step %}

### Choose your language

Firefox detects the source language automatically; pick your target language from the dropdown.
{% endstep %}

{% step %}

### Click Translate

Click **Translate**.
{% endstep %}
{% endstepper %}

The first time you translate into a given language, Firefox downloads a small language pack; this is a one-time step per language. To revert, click the toolbar icon again and choose **Show Original**.

## Safari (Mac, iPhone, iPad)

{% stepper %}
{% step %}

### Open the page

Open the page on docs.snomed.org.
{% endstep %}

{% step %}

### Tap the "aA" icon&#x20;

<img src="https://help.apple.com/assets/694059D0C518698CA301A7F5/694059D2E3D62F01EF0FA1EE/en_US/2be785bc3a84269fe035fc1008d18c49.png" alt="the Translate button" height="30" width="41">

Click (or tap) the transalte icon on the left side of the address bar.
{% endstep %}

{% step %}

### Choose your language

Select **Translate to…** and choose your language.
{% endstep %}

{% step %}

### Enable translation

The first time, you'll be asked to click **Enable Translation**; the page will then reload in your chosen language.
{% endstep %}
{% endstepper %}

To change the language later, or turn translation off, use the tranlsate menu again.

## Troubleshooting

The docs site is built with GitBook, which loads new pages "in the background" rather than doing a full reload every time you click a link. Occasionally this means a browser's translate bar won't notice you've moved to a new page, and the page stays in English.

**Fix:** if a page you navigate to isn't translating, just refresh it (Ctrl+R / Cmd+R, or F5). That forces a full reload and the translate prompt should reappear.

**Still not working?** Before digging further, it helps to pin down two things:

* **Which device are you on?** A computer, an Android phone or tablet, or an iPhone/iPad? The menus and settings involved are different for each.
* **What's actually happening?** Is the Translate option missing entirely (no icon, no pop-up, no menu item), or does it appear but fail or show an error when you use it?

Those two answers point you to the right fix: turning on automatic translation in your browser's language settings (see the steps for each browser above), updating to a newer browser version, or, if the option is missing on a managed work device, checking with whoever administers it, since translation can be switched off by IT policy.

## FAQ

**Will this translate tables, diagrams, and images?** Text in tables and page content will translate. Text baked into images or diagrams (e.g. some specification diagrams) will not, since browsers can only translate live text.

**Does this cost anything?** No. Chrome, Edge, Firefox, and Safari all include this for free, with no extension or account needed.

**Is my content sent anywhere?** Chrome, Edge, and Safari send page text to their translation service (Google Translate or Microsoft Translator) to process it. Firefox's built-in translation runs entirely on your device. If privacy is a concern, Firefox is the most private option.

**Where can I find officially translated SNOMED CT materials, rather than machine translation?** SNOMED International currently publishes only a small number of fully translated guides. See the [**Translated Guides**](https://docs.snomed.org/snomed-ct-practical-guides#translated-guides) tab on the Practical Guides page, which currently includes a German Starter Guide and a few Spanish guides. For anything not yet translated there, check with your National Release Center, as many produce their own localized versions of key guides.

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation dynamically by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the current page URL with the `ask` query parameter, and the optional `goal` query parameter:

```
GET https://docs.snomed.org/snomed-international-documents/documentation-translation-guide/readme-1.md?ask=<question>&goal=<endgoal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is optional and describes the broader end goal you are ultimately trying to accomplish on behalf of the user. GitBook uses it to tailor the answer towards what is most useful for that goal.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
